The story of how Woodward Avenue got its
name has been passed-down for generations
and frequently written about.

The road was named after Augustus B. Woodward
an eccentric character one Historian compared to
Charles Dickens. More on that in the links below.

When charged with egotism about having the road
named after him, Woodward heterophemized by saying
that it was so named because it led to the woods.
He also explained that "Woodbridge" street had NOT
been named after the territorial secretary. Instead it was
named after a wooden bridge over the Savoyard river (a long
forgotten river still flowing under the Buhl building).
Augustus was such a curious fellow....
